Nawab Muzaffar Khan

Nawab Muzaffar Khan was the last ruler of the Multan province under the Durrani-Afghan administration before the Sikh conquest of the city in the early nineteenth century.

He belonged to the Sadozai family and governed Multan during a period of growing political pressure from the Sikh Empire under Maharaja Ranjit Singh.

In 1818, Ranjit Singh's forces launched a major campaign against Multan. Nawab Muzaffar Khan resisted the advancing army and defended the city and its fort.

The fighting culminated in the siege of Multan Fort. Muzaffar Khan and members of his family and forces continued their resistance after the outer defences had been breached.

Nawab Muzaffar Khan was killed during the fighting at Multan Fort in June 1818. His death marked the end of the Durrani-era political rule of Multan and the beginning of Sikh rule over the city.

His memory remains closely connected with Multan Fort, now known as Qasim Bagh Fort, and with the city's history of resistance during the political changes of the nineteenth century.

Nawab Muzaffar Khan occupies an important place in the historical memory of Multan and the wider cultural history of the Saraiki region.
